Event Description

What is The Red Ribbon?
The red ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn by people all year round and particularly around World AIDS Day to demonstrate care and concern about HIV and AIDS, and to remind others of the need for their support and commitment.
The artists who formed the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus wished to create a visual symbol to demonstrate compassion for people living with AIDS and their caregivers. The ribbon soon became renowned as an international symbol of AIDS awareness, becoming a politically correct fashion accessory on the lapels of celebrities. The Red Ribbon continues to be a powerful force in the fight to increase public awareness of HIV/AIDS and in the lobbying efforts to increase funding for AIDS services and research.
The red ribbon is worn in memory of those who have died of an AIDS related illness and is a symbol of the desperate need for an end to this pandemic. In commemoration of the lives lost, it is Africa Youth Ministry’s goal to have 50,000 red ribbons worn on the lapels of HIV/AIDS Activists around World AIDS Day (December 1). Around the world there are hundreds of activities taking place to mark World AIDS Day, including candlelight vigils, HIV Testing Campaigns, Concerts, art shows, marches and religious services. If there’s no organized event in your area then you can organise one event yourself?
